I just put in a brand new memory card 8gb and brand new duracell batterys because my camera when I plug the usb into the PC normally it would load the driver and then I can put my pictures on my computer now when I plug the camera USB into my desktop HP computer the camera either shuts down or I get a red X in the tray notifications saying driver device load failed... Please help, Thanks -Fred
When you connect the USB cable from the camera to the PC, the camera should shut down. If it doesn't perhaps your cable is defect. Or one of the connectors, from the camera or from the PC.
When the cable works on another PC (or Laptop) you can assume the cable is good. But then the USB connector in the PC could be not connected, or the USB controller in the PC is not working correct.
Sure you did install the Nikon software on the PC to?
Oops, trouble with virus on the PC is another thing. I'm not that good with virus, so I try to keep away from that. But if you don't have important stuf on your PC, or if your data is already backupped I should do a clean and complete installation of the PC. But be aware the virus can still be on everything you hooked up to that PC. So even your expensive tumb drive can be a carrier of virus(ses). And if you don't know what virus(she's) were on your computer, there still can be some there. One of the first things a virus does, is desensebilisze any virus scanner. It could be you still have a root kit and than even reinstalling windows won't help. As long as you can't get everything working correct, don't trust the PC. When you setup the windows again, make an extra account for yourself, that does not have admin status, so you can't accedentely install a program, that does not belong on your computer. Listen to recent podcasts from Leo Laporte the tech guy. He knows lots more about virus and security than I do. Success.
Thank you, sir

SOURCE: How to transfer Nikon Coolpix camera pictures to memory card?
Make sure you have an SD memory card inserted and your camera is on. Press the Play button to view your images. Now press menu and scroll down to the copy feature. You have two options, copy from camera to memory card is on top, and from memory card to camera is on the bottom. Once you select your option, choose your pictures and copy.

Lardzor.

try going to my computer, then selecting under "devices with removable storage" the one that says coolpix, camara, something along those lines. mine says "nikon D40". double click on that (if it's there) and that should be it. mine doesnt autoplay either.

ok I figured out how to do it! put the memory card into the camera, then go to view the pictures. Then press the menu button and scroll until you see the copy button. Then you will see the option to copy from camera to card, or card to camera. Press the option to copy from camera to card and press select all....(or whichever pictures you want copied...I wanted all pictures copied). Then voila! it takes a few seconds to copy from the camera to the card, and there you have it! :)

If you can get the pics using a card reader, why are you insisting on using the camera and USB cord? Pros always use a card reader.

Did you format the card in the camera before trying to use it?

When I normally would plug in my camera to the USB port on my win7 desktop pc, I would hit the power on button and then the device driver would pop up and I would just use a different view photo option because I believe I never did install the software to this PC from the disc, I just called Nikon and they offered to email me a download link, so im waiting for that, but I tried plugging it in on another computer and the same issue, right when I plug in the device, it shuts off, instead when I plugged it in I would get a nice pop up in my tray notification area with different methods of retrieving my pictures, well now it just says the device driver is not recognized/compatible or w.e it says, etc, I did grab a program to run a complete driver update of my entire PC, well I got about 6 out of date drivers, mostly some Realtek Audio and Video things, but I do notice I am missing the "Usb Mass Storage Device Driver" or w.e exactly it called, it shows I need to update it here I will show you a screen capture, but I looked for it in my USB driver area to try to uninstall it then reboot and hope windows would install it, but its just not there, period.
You don't need to wait for Nikon. Just goto Nikon USA (google that) and on their site, the Support part, should offer the software you need. View or NXview is fre for most Nikon camera's and there you get the correct driver for your windows PC to.
Add a CommentIt is strange, because lmost every driver you need on windows 7 and 8 is delivered by microsoft, but for transfering pictures to a PC (or MAC) you need special software.
Add a Comment You also could use Adobe elemenst , lightroom or photoshop to transfer pictures from the camera to the PC.
Any links to those would be great but I dont know if they would work because I just installed the ViewNX 2 that Nikon emailed me and still the same problem I plug the camera into my PC and it nothing happens at all, period, I run an ebay store and have been using it for lots of pictures lately, so I installed new batteries and a new memory card today thinking that was the problem, but it wasnt, I also had Norton remove a virus I got from fixing an old Windows XP computer I loaded some anti virus programs from my computer onto a thumbdrive, then loaded them onto this old XP laptop, fixed the laptop, then plugged my expensive new usb thumb drive back into my PC to remove/clean the drive and it shut off my internet and infected me with a Trojan, but Norton remotely fixed everything, do you think it is possible the Trojan corrupted my USB ports somehow? I mean the ones on the back I tried still the same but I am typing to you on my usb keyboard and mouse so I dont think that could be it..
Everytime I switch a USB port this shows up "failed"
tray notification shows this everytime I switch a USB port
