First, we had the dreaded "fet error" message rear its ugly head sporadically (every minute or two is my guess) during usage. From every account I have read, this required a motor control board repair/replacement. We did that and when I reinstalled the new one and now turn on the treadmill, we get a "start up error" message about 5 seconds into it and it stops. LED 1, 2 and 3 are lit but 4 is not. I think number 2 flashes. When I remove the speed sensor cable from motor control board, LED number 4 comes on. I tried removing and reinstalling speed sensor on motor but that didn't change anything. Do I need a new speed sensor? What might be equally, if not more telling, is that the motor makes a clicking noise and increases with speed. I'm guessing that one of the brushes may be bad but I don't know. The motor is 2.75 HP MagnaDrive. I did remove the motor and tried to have it tested/repaired but the motor repair shop didn't work on these. If I do need a new motor, can I use another Life Fitness MagnaDrive in case I can't find an exact replacement? Thanks very much in advance.

Error 1 - Start up error. This is caused because the belt was commanded to move and the opto (speed sensor on the motor) has not seen any movement or the belts movement was interrupted prior to it reaching its commanded speed. To fix Verify opto operation in Diagnostics, Motor Test
Mode, Section 2. Verify DC voltage at connector P6 pins 1 and 2. Verify that LED 4 on the Motor Controller flashes as the motor moves. Let me know if you need any more help. Fitness Fix-It
SOURCE: Fet error message
The FET error message is caused by the driver transistor on the motor controller has shorted out. Unfortunately, the fix is replacing the motor controller.
