Check the region code. Or the laser beamer is dying.

I have a Sony DAV S500 AV system and with certain DVD and with the volumn just over 20 (not really that loud), the system shuts down and PROTECT shows in the message window. I read somewhere on the web...

If the subwoofer and other speakers were included with the system, THAT is what they're designed for. Mixing and matching with other products is usually discouraged if not forbidden.

http://audio.manualsonline.com/search.html?q=Sony+DAV-S500

If the problem returns with connection of the sub it may be defective or on its way out. Internal damage to the voice coil from being overdriven could have melted or worn through the insulation and it would cause intermittent undesired electrical contact or load variation under certain conditions, like high volumes.

If your speaker level settings are unusually boosted for the sub you may be overdriving it.

Cannot play dvds

Get a can of compressed air and spray some air in there. Your lens may have become dirty. Has it ever played DVDs? How long ago?

Playing burnt dvds in black and white

Cause: You are trying to play a DVD with NTSC-standard on a PAL-videodevice. Solution: switch your video-device to NTSC-standard or to "AUTO". Explanation: I had this "Black&White" problem after I played a DVD which I downloaded from Internet. My video-device (beamer) was set on PAL and gave black&white pictures, but when I switched it to "NTSC" the problem was solved. Apperently the Sony DAV-DZ100 switches automatically from PAL to NTSC when needed.

Not reading all DVDs

This problem has been getting more and more of a popualar complaint and there is no real setr answer for it as I have found that when i see this happening theres an alighnment issue, a foggy lens, dirt or hair in the carrage assembly track or worm gear, and also a weak laser assy. Good Luck
