Hi, I have a Toshiba 80GB MK8037GSX 2.5" SATA in

1) have checked bios cannot see hdd mounted.

That is BAD -- the disk-drive could have "died".

2) tried a seagate hdd works fine so connections in laptop seem to be working

That shows that your motherboard is GOOD, but that your disk-drive is BAD.

3) can hear hardrive trying to do something as can hear harddrive usual noise, continous noise for about 5 sec before getting the error message

That is BAD -- the disk-drive is "dying".

4) no rattling or crackling noise from drive apart from the above

That is BAD -- none of the files can be read from your disk.

i have created a ubuntu boot up disk which allows me to access laptop but does shows error when locating hdd,

That is BAD.

once in ubuntu i can access internet but it does not show the windows partition of the harddrive, only shows ubuntu as opearing system, confused.

That is BAD. Only the CD/DVD disk has been mounted -- Ubuntu could not mount the disk-drive.

In regards to ubuntu working does this mean the hdd is ok?

No, it means that your motherboard is working.

and is there anyhting i can try via ubuntu to locate the files?

No. The disk-drive is "dead".

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.

Have a laptop with windows 2000 on it I just hade the hard drive reinstaled now I can not get it to reconize a mouse the touch pad works and it will trya and down load new devise driver for a mouse but...

Can imaging old systems of windows 2000. cyclic redundancy check is memory error. It occurs when data cannot be read properly from any type of memory. It can be hard disk, RAM, or CD/DVD drive. Please mention, hardware specifications properly. Is it having USB mouse or old ps2 type. If having more than one ram, try running with only 1 ram at a time. Before removing RAMs make sure you set page file settings to system managed. If RAM is ruled out then it could be hard drive. Windows 2000 does support optical mouse, is your system has ps2 port for mouse and keyboard instead of USB? Before investing more on old machine, I think you should consider purchasing new system or second hand.

Cannot start dubbing

I'd guess you are using cable TV-some cable companies put their own copyguard on the cable signal, Comcast, in my area does this. The DVD sees the 'do not copy signal' and won't do it.
Try recording directly to DVD without using the HDD drive. If you get a playable disk, I doubt it is your machine. If you don't get a playable disk, that plays in THAT machine-it is the machine..
