Clean the electrical contacts on the printhead and inside the product The ink nozzles on the printheads might clog if they are exposed to air for more than a few minutes or if the product is not used for long periods of time. Follow these steps to clean the electrical contacts on the printheads. CAUTION: Follow these steps carefully to avoid damaging the sensitive electrical components.

  1. Make sure that the product is turned on.
  2. Open the top cover of the product.
  3. Press and hold the OK button for five seconds. The carriage moves to the left side of the product and stops. Release the OK button.
  4. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent.
  5. Unplug the product power cord from the electrical outlet.
NOTE: Do not turn the product off by pressing the Power button (HP officejet Pro 7580 problems with streaking - c01346625.gif ). This causes the carriage to move out of reach.
  6. Lift the printhead latch. Figure 1: Lift the printhead latch HP officejet Pro 7580 problems with streaking - c01448109.gifuploads/images/c01448109.gif" alt="c01448109.gif" class="h_mi" />
  7. Lift the handle on the printhead that the error message indicates is missing or damaged, and then pull the printhead out of its slot. Figure 2: Lift the handle HP officejet Pro 7580 problems with streaking - c01448110.gife printhead c01448110.gif
  8. Use a dry, soft, lint-free cloth to remove any ink from the electrical contacts on the printhead.
    1. Wipe the electrical contacts with the swab until no ink residue remains, and then wipe the electrical contacts with a fresh cloth to dry them and remove lint.
    2. After the electrical contacts on the printhead are clean and dry, place the printhead on a sheet of paper or a paper towel. Make sure that the ink nozzles face up and do not touch the paper.
    3. Use a fresh, dry, soft, lint-free cloth to clean the electrical contacts inside the product. HP officejet Pro 7580 problems with streaking - c01448112.gif>Figure 4: Clean the electrical contacts inside the product c01448112.gif
    4. Allow at least five minutes for the contacts to dry. Check the contacts for lint or debris, and then dry or clean the contacts again if needed.
    5. PlugHP officejet Pro 7580 problems with streaking - c01346625.gifpower cord into the electrical outlet.
    6. Press the Power button (c01346625.gif ) to turn on the product. 'Printhead missing or damaged, replace the printhead' displays on the control panel.
    7. Insert the printhead into its color-coded slot. Press down firmly on the printhead to make sure the electrical contacts touch.
    8. Pull the printhead latch all the way forward, and then press down firmly to engage the latch.
NOTE: You might have to press firmly to engage the latch. If the error message indicates that both printheads are missing or damaged, repeat the steps in this procedure to clean the other printhead.
    9. Close the top cover of the product. The product restarts and then prints an alignment page.
    10. Click on setup on the printer select tools and select clean printhead.
    11. inside the printer clean the metal carriage rod, rollers and that is it (clean with moist cotton swab)

When you change the print heads for a Hp L7580 what problems does it resolve?

Replacing the print heads fixes any poor print quality you are experiencing. Typically people replace print heads when a certain color (most likely black) is printing very faint or streaky. Over time the nozzles in the print head can get clogged with dried up ink. Enough clogged nozzles will inhibit ink from being deposited on the page in certain areas.

HP L7700 officejet printer leaves streaks on black ink lines only. Have cleaned heads repeatedly, changed black and color cartridges - nothing works.

Print in grayscale (black area streaking only) If the streaks are in a black area of a black and white printout, change to grayscale printing.
NOTE: This step does not apply to color printouts.
  1. In the application you are printing from, click File , and then click Print .
  2. Make sure the printer is selected and click Properties .
  3. Click the Color tab, and select Print Grayscale and High Quality .

Rachael,
My HP L7580 has been doing the same thing, and I've followed the same steps you describe above, with the same result. Have you resolved the issue? I'm about to give up on the printer AND Hewlett-Packard.

How do i clean the printheads on a hp officejet

hp printers have a utility program that cleans and purges the printer heads. Go to HP on your startup menu and look through the options....mine is located in the "hp solutions center".

It has an option for purging the printer heads.

Black ink problem with printout on hp7780

Always try replacing the ink cartridges first.

It sounds like the print heads in the 7780 are bad. Don't confuse the ink cartridges with print heads. The cartridges fit inside the print heads. You will need to change the heads. Here is a link to HP's how-to.

Could have the same problem with the Dell.

The paper won't advance enough to print in our HP officejet 7580

Look for little pieces of paper that get stuck in the rollers, also verify that the gears and roller didn't get misaligned when you cleared the jam.
Good Luck,
