Macbook Pro DVI---> HDMI + Digital Optical Out = Problem w/ Sound

I have a new Sony HTC-100 Sound Bar, and I love the way the thing sounds. The unit receives 3 HDMI signals and outputs them to my TV via one HDMI out.
Now comes the problem. I have a Macbook Pro that comes with a DVI port and an Optical port. I have the optical cable, and I also have a DVI to HDMI cable. Whenever I plug in the MBP optical cable into the optical port labeled "DVD" on the back of the HTC, I get sound from my MBP. But if I go and plug in the DVI-HDMI Cable (the HDMI end of course) to the HTC port labeled "DVD" then I get the picture but lose the sound.
Is there any way to tell the unit that I want video only through the HDMI but sound through the optical? Any help is much appreciated!

On the Sony The HDMI takes "priority" over all others, that's why you loose audio. If you run your DVI/HDMI to the TV and optical to the soundbar that would fix your issue. If your TV does not have Multiple HDMI inputs, you can get a DVI/Component adapter for your MBP then run it to the TV, or, If you have to have HDMI just to have HDMI, you can get a 2:1 HDMI switch and still have optical to your soundbar. Make sense? If youneed more help, just post a comment and I'll help some more.

Ps3 doesnt give out a surround sound output

Hi
In this configration you will not get surround sound. Because tv is not able to reproduse the surround sound through its out put from the HDMI input. You have to connect the HDMI of PS3 to the Onkyo receiver and the HDMI Monitor Out of the Onkyo to the TV. This can only done if the Onkyo AVR Have HDMI IN/OUT option.

If not the connect the Optical out of PS3 to any one of the optical input of the Onkyo receiver.
After that you have to goto the setup Menu the Onkyo and assing the optical input in wich you have conncted the PS3.

Aslo the following setting in PS3

Menu>>> Settings >>> Sound Settings >>> Audio Output Settings >>> Select the connector..= DIGITAL OUTPUT (OPTICAL)

I just bought a Playstation 3 for the first time. I have it hooked up through HDMI using an HDMI to DVI converter to my TV. It looks great, but there is no sound. Even hooking the optical sound output to...

On your PS3, go to the Settings tab, then scroll down to the "Sound Settings".

Once in Sound Settings, select "Audio Output Settings"

Here you should have 3 options: HDMI; Optical Digital; and Audio Input Connector

Choose Optical Digital

You should be all set.

Also, make sure after doing this your stereo is on the correct channel.

When I plug my lap top into my tv via hdmi cable I get a picture but I do not get any sound. I have a year old LG 52" LCD tv

My MacBook laptop and probably others do not output sound on its mini-DVI connector and thus not into the HDMI adaptor. I would have to use the wired sound output or the optical output--same hole--into the sound system. If you have a DVI-HDMI adaptor, then that is the problem, there is no sound wiring on the DVI side. Same for VGA, which does not have digital video only analog.

No sound when hooking up DVi to HDMI...

This is normal, when you go from HDMI to DVI, the sound does not get transmitted. You need a separate cable to go from audio output on the computer to Audio input to the TV. There are speaker (headphone on laptop) jack to RCA audio cables, you could also go with digital audio or even optical out if your computer and TV both have the input and outputs.

I am using an HDMI cable on my STR-DG710 and get no sound

A lot of devices like PS3, HD DVD Players, Cable boxes, etc., require you to define on the setup menu if sound will be coming out of the HDMI cable or not. Most of these devices can be set to HDMI Auto, but not all of them do.

I currently have both my Blu-ray and HD DVD player outputting both video and sound through my HDMI into my STR-DG710. Both devices are setup to output sound through the HDMI.

But like the other person on here posted, it you have a DVI to HDMI cable, you won't be getting sound. The only device that will output sound from a DVI to HDMI are select computer graphics adapters like the GeForce 9800 GT series video cards, and even not all of those will have this feature.

Hope this helps.

Hooking up a sony playstation 3 with digital optical cable

Here's one solution, if you have an audio output from your tv, you can go from the audio output on your tv to the audio input on your receiver that way anything that is playing on your tv for example, playstation 3, dvd player etc. Anything playing on your tv will have audio on your onkyo home theater system. The other thing I would try if you want to hook ps3 directly to receiver is go to your connection settings on your ps3 menu and change your connection method to digital optical cable.
