Tried everything. No apparent case damage. Lens opens and retracts fine. As stated above EVERYTHING works except doesn't take photos or display image when in photo mode. Review of stored photos works fine.
Sounds like the CCD or a stuck shutter blade. Try this place: www.CamerasAndParts.com They only service Canons and they are the only place we recommend for the Canons. It's all they work on and they are about half the price of most shops, plus the work is just excellent through them.
If not a local camera repair place, one can send it back to Cannon who does have a mail in repair service for digital camera's.

A stuck shutter is another common failure mode for digital cameras. The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open).
To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see the following for further info and a simple fix that may help:

So you can see images that are on the card from previous taking but not new? Just to confirm - this is an optical SLR? With a mirror that flips up when you press the button - is that right? If so it souns like to mirror is not going up. Can you hear it go up? Come back

See this link. The symptoms indicate that your CCD (image sensor) failed. Canon will repair this at no charge, regardless of warranty status. Contact them as described at the link.
Testimonial: "I am returning camera to Canon for free repair (and they pay for shipping). Hopefully this will come true. Thank you for prompt excellent advice."
