I am sorry to say that this design of lens is the worst i've seen from Fuji.
Focus error relates to the mechanism right at the front of the lens. The motor and drive gear are in the end piece of the lens, as opposed to other cameras that have the focus mechanism in the back of the lens and is easily access able once inside the camera.
Does the lens stick? or buzz on power up? If you tap gently, with your finger nail, on the actual lens on power up ( you may have to do this several times) you may find the lens comes out ok and no error msg is displayed (until you try zooming). This will probably be because something is jamming the gears or the tiny tension spring used on the gears has come off. I have tried to clear several A500's with this problem with limited success.

Focus error message camera wontwork

I found this site to solve this problem. I got as far as tapping the lens, while turning it off. That worked but I still could not take pictures, so, I got the idea to put slight pressure on the lens when turning the camera on and was delighted to see that the error message was gone. Then, reluctantly, I snapped a picture...It worked. Hope this helps u 2..

Fuji finepix a510

After the basics, try dropping the camera on a carpeted area from about 2-3 feet. It worked for my Fuji A500 and 90% of the responders on the link. Everything on the web said it would cost ~$100 to fix. I was in the process of researching new cameras to buy and had nothing to lose by dropping it on the floor.
The error may be caused by debris in the zoom mechanism preventing it from working. Dropping the camera loosens the debris and voila!

'FOCUS ERROR'

If bought this at best buy and are still under your MFG warranty they can send it out to repair, or if you have their service plan, nothing you can do, this needs to be sent to a repair facility...
