After scanning a document to pdf the programs asks for a program with DPE? What is DPE? I'm on a Mac OS X Leopard.
This problem happened to me to (OfficeJet 6310xi). These steps solved my problem:
When the program has the error, there's a button so you can show it where DPE is. Click the button
Navigate to Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Hewlett-Packard/HP Scan Pro/DPE/
Click on DPE 11.6.app
Then I could scan to pdf. When I upgraded to Leopard, I reinstalled my HP software, even though HP says it isn't totally compatible with leopard.
I could not find DPE on my Mac, and you may not be able to either. My solution, when trying to create a PDF, was to go to the HP Scan Jet application, and navigate to the "Scan to" pull down menu at the bottom of the screen. Select "PDF to Preview". This dumps the image into Preview. From there, simply name it and save it.
HP now has new Mac software that fixes this problem in Leopard. No more DPE questions, no error messages. Go to http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DriverDownload.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=377691&taskId=135&prodTypeId=15179&prodSeriesId=377689&lang=en&cc=us&submit=Go%20»
Same problem w/ HP7280 and Leopard Mac 10.5.1. Browsed to DPE (used spotlight) Problem resolved.
One more note... I navigated to the folder on my Mac, but my scanner came with DPE 9.0 which won't even open on Leopard. The scanner came with Iris 11 for Windows, but not Mac. Nice.
So my lengthy workaround... I installed Iris 11 under Windows XP running under VMWare Fusion on my MacBook Pro and it works great from there.
I had the same problem with an error of DPE 11.6. manducasexta was right. Though do not try to point to this file as a routing solution, instead double click on it, register the OCR software. and as soon as you register the software, it will work for you. DPE 11.6 must be registered before proceeding or you will keep getting an error. Dave
Using the browser and navigating to the DPE worked for me. cheers

Same problem with scanning to pdf on scanjet 3970. Solved with starting the dpe programm
I have the same scanner, the scanjet 3570c and recently went to Leopard...
Installed the drivers which are just available for Tiger... and nothing!
Where is DPE?
I guessed and picked the Acrobat 8 folder.
Maybe I should have looked for it inhere before, but didn't :(
Now when I scan to a .pdf file, Adope Acrobat reader starts....
Any solution to change this and pick the correct folder instead.
Other than an complete reinstall?
I'm running Mac OS X Leopard, with HP Photosmart C6280
Tanx
it says phone is off hook, but phone line works
I have a 5280 with the same request "where is DPE?" I'm running Leopard and I can't find anything referring to DPE, I don't even know what DPE stands for! I can eventually save to PDF via Preview, not an ideal workround as I want to save direct to Word.
