The water from the dispenser on my refrigerator taste salty. We changed the filter about 2 months ago. We have a water softener and it runs through all the pipes in the house.

It is possible that the water softener is not functioning properly and causing the water from the refrigerator dispenser to taste salty. Here are a few things you can try to fix the issue:
  1. Check the water softener settings: Make sure the water softener is set to the correct salt dosage and regeneration frequency. If the settings are not correct, it can cause the water to taste salty.
  2. Check the water softener filter: The filter in the water softener may be clogged or dirty, causing the water to taste salty. Clean or replace the filter as needed.
  3. Check the water softener resin: The resin in the water softener removes hard water minerals and can become exhausted over time. If the resin is exhausted, it can cause the water to taste salty.
  4. Check the water softener bypass valve: The bypass valve allows you to bypass the water softener and use untreated water. Make sure the bypass valve is not accidentally left in the bypass position.
If you are unable to diagnose and fix the problem on your own, it is recommended to have a water treatment professional take a look at the water softener. They will have the necessary tools and expertise to properly diagnose and repair the issue.

Water pressure has dropped over time. when softener is bypassed, water pressure is fine

A inline water softener functions similar to a filter. When a filter become clogged it restricts water flow. Perhaps this is what is happening with the inline softener unit. Try changing to a new unit.

Fabric softener ends up around rim of washer.

When you say you've cleaned both parts - have you poured hot water in and seen it actually drain out of the top peice while it was removed from the agitator? Have you poured hot water into the agitator with the top peice removed and seen it drain out of the holes? If not, repeated flushing (of the agitator) and soaking (of the top peice) with hot water as needed until is drains may be required. Until you can get water to drain out of both peices alone, it will work automatically. Once you have the water draining try again with a regular load of laundry and fabric softener. If it still doesn't work...

Since you've cleaned both parts (the non-removable and removeable top portion) of the agitator - it would suggest that the fabric softener dispenser's actuator inside the agitator is not functioning properly. The fabric softener isn't being released in the rinse (or at all really) and as a result of the centrifugal forces during the high speed spin cycle - it is causes the fabric softener to move up the sides of the dispenser and spray out of the top of the agitator onto the rim. This may be caused a mechanical or electrical failure in the washer or washer control. It will continue to work like this until it is fixed - so I suggest that you do not use the dispenser.

You will likely need to have the washer professionally serviced to have it begin working again. You can save the repair costs and either add the fabric softener yourself during the rinse cycle - or use "dryer sheets" in the dryer instead.

Good luck!

Softener left in dispenser when finised

There was no flushing of softener due to unavailblity of water. Make sure that water tap is ON & check again as it is possible that the water inlet solenoid valve for the dispenser is not functioning.

I have a culligan n8 softener. Probably about 15-20 yrs old. Dont really have a problem with iron stains in the house and it functions well but would like the water a little softer.Any suggestions?

Your softener is a self contained unit with ingreidants that will degrade over time. If the unit is oversaturated it won't perform as it did originally. You can add external sand, carbon, etc., filters to help softener work more effieciently but, you may have to replace unit. You can try salt that removes iron, etc., Morton comes in green bags. This may improve your end result. It may be time to replace the unt.

Front load washer

HI. your model has a dispenser solenoid for the fabric softener dispenser on this unit. If the solenoids are out or malfunctioning, it will render the dispenser useless. i recommend checking the solenoids on the fabric softener dispenser for continuity. The resistance should be 1100+- 7%. replacing this blown solenoid will fix this issue. Remember. the dispenser valve will not function without a working solenoid.

please rate and god bless.
