We have an Admiral freezer model UL4000ECW2 that is about 10 years old. It is not frost free but we defrosted it a couple months ago. It is keeping food frozen, but the things on the top shelf do not seem quite as cold as the things stored lower down. It has started dripping water on the inside toward the front on the top. There is now a lot of frost build up and icicles as it drips water and then runs down and freezes. There is also water forming on the inside of the door at the top that is dripping down on the first shelf of the door. We thought it may be the gasket but it seems to be in good shape, we see no cracks or anything. Can anybody help?
Hello.
I can help. Once we notice anything different from before we start becoming more aware of small variations. Regarding things on the top shelf warmer than on the bottom, this is always true because, "warm air rises and cold air falls". If you want the top shelf colder turn the thermostat to the next colder setting, always a good idea in the Summer season anyway.
Even though your gasket looks good, a ten year old gasket is not as pliable as a new one resulting in the moisture problem you describe. I would begin by applying a thin coating of vaseline to the gasket once a week for a month. This little trick of the trade will often work. If it doesn't improve the situation do replace the gasket.
Hello Yellow, thank you for your post!
I understand that your Frigidaire freezer is dripping water out of the corner of the door. It is possible that with your power going out the heat may have caused the gasket to warp. Do you see any frost build-up? The water that is dripping could be coming from condensation within the freezer. I would recommend checking the gasket to see if it is allowing warm air to enter the freezer.
I recommend that you visually inspect the door gasket for defects such as gaps or tears. You can also use a dollar bill to test the door gasket. Place a dollar bill in between the door and the body of the freezer. If the dollar bill pulls out with no to little resistance, you may need to replace the door gasket. A faulty door gasket can allow warm air to enter the compartment and cause frost to condensation or a leak. I hope this information is helpful. -Matt
