Wow, something similar just happened to me the other day, my black ink ran out & when I replaced it, it just wouldn't print, I kept trying to print things and it sounded like it was printing but then it would just shoot out a blank page of paper (I was trying to print BLACK). So, I went to the Brother website for troubleshooting tips and it said to make sure I had the ink cartridges installed properly so I took the black cartridge back out (it WAS installed correctly, but I was willing to try anything at this point), so I took it out, gave it a blow, like how you would blow on the old Nintendo game catridges when they did not work-I'm not sure if this did anything at all but it's what I did) and then I put it back in). The machine asked if had just replaced black I said "Yes", then it did another "cleaning", as it does when you replace any cartridge. Then I went in the menu to have it print out a "test page" (the instructions for this were in the troubleshooting tips on the website), the test page printed out with NOT all the little black squares as IT SHOULD BE so when it asked me if the test page was ok, I said "NO", then it did ANOTHER CLEANING and I did another test page, this time it worked ok, then I was able to print.
So, bottom line is, maybe take the ink out, make sure you installed it correctly, put it back in, print a test page, if the test page does nto come out right, then tell it it is no good by selecting "NO", then it will do another cleaning and then maybe it will work, if not, then check for more troubleshooting tips on their website, good luck.

My printer is not printing any black at all right out of the box. It's a MFC-6490cw.
I mean it looks like a brand new piece of paper when it comes out. I have tried two different brand new black cartridges and have cleaned them both several times with no change.
Any ideas?
Same solution as mineola5 reported in "Wow, something similar just happened to me the other day"
SYMPTOM: black not printing, but all four colors were printing fine, swapped in new black cartridge, no improvement
SOLUTION: Initiated Ink cleaning for BLACK 4-5 times, each time saw a little more improvement, repeated until it was good enough
NOTES:
1. To initiate ink cleaning on my Brother MFC-5490CFN press the Ink button to the left of the Menu button and reply to prompts - when I removed and replaced Black cartridge it asked if I'd replaced, I replied Yes, and it did not initiate cleaning which I think it should have.
2. To test printing between cleanings, I selected short phrase of black text to print instead of Print Test to save ink

Yes, you can cut a small piece of electrical tape and place it over the window on the inside edge of the cartridge. it has to wrap around the window tightly.

The print head is clogged. If not unclogging with cleaning process may you try to clean manualy. You need to dissasembly the hole printer to remove the print head.Put it in hot water. If you don't have a technical skills, don't try anything.
If not help just buy new printer, because the new print head will cost you as much more.
