I have a Canon Powershot A95. The lens won't come out when I turn on the camera. I can see the pictures on the card. The viewfinder remains dark when its in picture mode.

That would explain the darkness if the lens is stopped down. It would seem the aperture control is faulty on the camera body. Normally, the aperture remains open until you take the picture. It is only closed down while the shutter is open.

Went to canon website and found they had a problem with the ccd which causes these problems and will fix it for free. Apparently there are lots of models with this faulty component.
