There is a solenoid valve that operates when the ice maker cam rotates and operates a micro switch or a smart chip to open this valve allowing water to flow into the ice maker. This cam or smart switch times the water flow to allow just enough water to fill the tray and then allows the solenoid to close. (a solenoid is just an electro-magnetic plunger) Your solenoid may be bad or the water line may have an ice plug in the part of the hose that goes into the ice maker.(This can happen if your freezer is turned up too high and your water line freezes) Also the smart chip (controller) may be bad. You can use the old hair dryer trick to try and unfreeze the line, but if your controller has gone south, then the circuit board has to be replaced. You can go to http://www.whirlpool.com/manuals/ and input your model number and get a manual for the machine. If you are a competent DIY person, you may be able to repair it your self.

can you see the ice maker's white cover?? try to pry that off , usually a little space for a ***** driver to be inserted into where the body of ice maker and the cover meet in lower right corner. after removing check the gear in center of ice machine. there should be 2 little tabs that hold that gear on." picture trying to snap that gear on , the tabs would hold it in place" do those tabs appear tobe broken?? at least one anyway(although small ther should be a distinct space between the tabs where they sprung back into place) if theyre broken, theres your problem you need to replace the ice maker assy,(entire unit)

Try
using an hairdryer or defrosting the unit completely , this often get
rid of blockage caused by frozen lines fixing the problem.
The water lines can also be unblocked from dirt using a thin flexible shaft. This after defrosting.
If all that does not fix the problem, then you may need to check the wiring to icemaker solenoid.
