My airbag light on 2001 Dodge Durango is coming on and off without reason, how can i solve this problem?
This is likely the same as the problem I had with my 2001 Durango SLT with radio and cruise controls in the steering wheel. The air bag light came on periodically at first but then much more often. The mechanic checked the codes and said it was a bad clock spring in the column. $268 for the part and 2 hrs to put it in ($500. thank you). Being inventive I found a fix at $0. cost. Here it is. Disconnect the neg battery wire to disable everything. Remove the steering wheel airbag 2 screws from underneath. Unplug the air bag plugs. Remove the lower steering column cover 3 torqs screws. Test for continuity from the lower yellow plug to the upper yellow plug to determine which wire is bad(has no continuity). Move the bad wire and its clip to a different terminal on the 4 pin connector in the steering wheel end (2 are unused but have wires in the clock spring) and move the matching wire in the lower connector to the empty terminal that gives conntinutity with the upper wire. You need a dental pic to get the clips to release from the connectors. Re assemble the air bag, cover and batery terminal. You are now using one of the previously unused teminals and fresh wires in the clock spring. PS I don't a dealer will ever try this or tell you about it as they want to sell parts and labor.
