1. The software is not required - if you have Windows Movie Maker that will work just as well.
2. It does require the DV (firewire) connection. USB connection creates a master-slave interface for "copy and pasting" or transferring low-frame video content (web-cam) or significantly compressed video w/ special drivers. This camcorder records digitally and requires a digital to digital peer-to-peer interface which the firewire connection allows for.
3. For those looking for Vista USB drivers - there are none from the manufacturer. Vista and XP have adequate native drivers for plug and play - camcorder should work just by plugging it in. If it's not recognizing, it could be a number of things:
-bent or broken USB pins
-inactive USB controller
-erroneous system drivers for USB
-camcorder is not plugged into AC power or is not on
-hotsync manager software from cellphones and PDA interference.

The usb is only used for the still pics and for the webcam. You need a DV cable to upload vid.

I've done a lot of research into this problem and I know the solution if you're using Windows XP!! Here are the steps...
1. Download "Winrar". Its a program similar to Winzip. Install Winrar onto your pc. http://www.win-rar.com/index.php?id=938&dl=wrar380.exe
2. Download the camcorder's driver file by clicking on this link:
http://panasonic.ru/upload/iblock/55d/NV-GS11%20USBDriver_Me_98SE_2k_XP.rar
Open the file (won't open if winrar not installed first) and install it.
3. Using Windows XP open Movie Maker. On my pc this was found in the same spot as Paint and the Calculator, ie Programs - Accessories.
4. On the panasonic camcorder go to "Menu-Playback-USB" and change the USB option to "Webcam".
5. Use a cable to connect the camcorder into a USB port on the pc.
6. In Movie Maker, select "Capture Video - Capture video from device". Then your camcorder will appear as an icon to be selected and you're away!!
Just wanted to upload the mini dv movies to my pc but it took me a while to figure this all out so hope this saves you from that grief!
Cheers

Hi,
To transfer video from your camera you will need a firewire cable and a firewire port on your PC. If you don't have such a port you can buy a PCI firewire port.
After you connected your camera with firewire cable you can then use windows movie maker to transfer your video.
