Open the Charm (slide touch into the screen from the right side), on the bottom there are 6 icons, touch the top left one. Check the your not in airplane mode and select the desired WiFi network available.
Seems to be a common problem.
You are on the right track with holding down power button.
1. Hold down for 20 secs, Wait 5secs, hold down for up to 10 secs, it may turn on before then.
2. Does the screen have a dim glow, even though there is nothing on it?
Let it discharge itself so the glow is gone, may take some hours.
Plug it into charge for at least 30 mins.
Try to turn it on.

Please explain- do you mean that nothing happens when you push the power button? Does it show anything at all then go black with the windows button vibrating being the only thing? Is there any error message? Please clarify.
Check your manual or search on Microsoft forum to see how you can stop the change. Unfortunately with the apps, this is dependant on Microsoft releasing software/apps that work on the tablet.
