I just changed all 4 ink cartridges and the printing is so faint I can hardly see it, am I missing a step?

The print head is clogged.
Try powerful cleaning:
Press menu, then start black copy, then four times arrow-up quickly after another.Machine will be in maintenance mode
(all lights will flash).
Press 7-6-4 and OK (or start-black-copy).
When finished press 7-6-3 then start black copy,
printer will do a power purge.
Leave maintenance mode by pressing 9-9.
If this not help better think about new printer, because cost of repairing this one is profitable.

With full, new cartridge, test print only shows 6-10 dots. Cleaning repeatedly does not fix.

How to get the copy counter on the display?

Press the stop/reset key, start key
and the left copy exposure adjustment
key in the order presented and hold
them down.
Press the stop/reset key. entering service mode.
Enter the number of the maintenance
item to be executed using the copy
exposure adjustment keys or the zoom
+/- keys
enter 000 start to print staus report.

Do not change any settings...only use 000 to print report, then 001 to exit service mode after it has finished printing.

This is very important so that you dont render your machine useless.

To exit service mode-
Enter 001 using the copy exposure
adjustment keys or the zoom
+/- keys, and press the start key.

Very Light Print

What you need to do is adjust shading. That recalabrates the scanner. To enter the machine into the tech mode you press " menu, # 1934" then you will be in the tech mode, a T should appear on the machine screen. You then go to machine setup and maintenance, then scroll to adjust shading or just shading, depending on how your specific firmware states it.
Then place 5 sheets of white paper on the glass, 5 pieces of paper think not spread out, then press start, if it askes you DO you want to asjust press start and let it run through the setup.
Once you have cleaned the scanner you really need to adjust teh shading. A better way to say it would be scanner calabration.

press menu then start bk copy then fourtimes arrow-up quickly after another. machine will be in maintenance mode (all lights will flash).
press 7-6-4 and OK (or start-bk-copy).

Machine will do some refreshing of ink and some special cleaning.

When finished press 7-6-3 start-bk copy
machine will do a power purge.

leave maintenance mode by pressing 9-9.

do run a test print.

DO USE ORIGINAL BROTHER INK or skyhorse generic ink only due to the fact that other generic ink will defenetly do damage to the printer!

Will not print black

The ph will be cleaned by pressing ink thru the system (tubes and ph). Do use only dye-ink for this procedure. The best way is to use original brother ink.
place a new cart into position and make sure that they are secured.

press menu then start bk copy then fortimes arrow up. machine will be in maintenance mode. press 7 then 6 then 4 then start bk copy. machine will refresh ink and do some cleaning. afterwards press 7 then 6 then 3 then start bk copy. machine will do a power purge. when finished press 9 then 9 to leave the maintenance mode. do run a test quality print by pressing ink etc.. If you cant see any bk the ph is defenetly clogged and cant be fixed anymore. It needs replacing.
