On an old Nokia cell phone, if the cell phone bill is not paid will it say "insert SmartChip"?
My old Nokia phone displays the message "Insert SmartChip" and when I dial it says "Emergency calls only". I shut it off, took out the battery and the SmartChip and then put them back. It didn't help. Does it have anything to do with whether the bill is paid? My brother pays the bill and I cannot reach him right now.

If the phone displays the message 'Insert sim' in which you have already inserted a sim card, it is because the phone doesnot reads the sim card and it is currently locked to any particular network. Nokia 5130 phones are old DCT phones which can be unlock easily and freely through online. Search online or get the code from the site Unlock-Free.com where they are providing free unlock codes for certain Nokia phones.
You are placing the smart chip on top of the smart chip holder. It's a little metal square where the smart chip should go. Lift up the metal square and place the smart chip underneath. I had to go to my local AT&T dealer to figure this out.
if under a year old from when you bought this phone take it make to the shop as this may be a fault with the phone try checking that the memory car on the side of the phone is in correctly as well
You have to insert the smart card all the way in on these phones. You can use a pen cap or something to push it all the way in there until it goes all the way in and click and stays there. Then it will not say " insert smart chip" anymore.
I have the same phone, and was getting the same "Insert Smartchip" message.
I seem to have fixed it by taking off the cover on the back of the phone (the part with the Sony Ericsson name on it), taking out the large battery, and gently pushing the little blue Smartchip back into its chamber with my fingernail, as it must have come loose somehow. The Smartchip "clicks" into the chamber when it is in there correctly.
I put it all back together, turned the phone off, then back on. When it came on, it worked again.
