During POST, the computer checks the computer's memory, determines the amount of installed memory, and then writes to and reads from the number of available bytes to ensure proper operation.
Basic Checks:
If an insufficient memory message appears, save and close any open files and exit any open application programs not in use.
Consider installing additional system memory.
Run the System Memory test in the Dell Diagnostics.
Reseat the memory modules.
Restart the computer.
If the problem still exists after you complete the basic checks, fill out the Diagnostic Checklist as you perform the following steps. CAUTION: Before you perform this procedure, see "Safety Information."
Reboot the computer.
Does the RAM count displayed correctly match the actual amount of memory installed in the computer?

1.You have a corrupted boot sector on your hard drive. 2.you will need to format the drive and then re-install the Operating System. 3. If you are not able to do this then a new hard drive is needed. 4. install a anti virus program after installing the operating system
To reinstall Xp from the CD you need to press F2 and go into the BIOS then select the boot order configuration and make the CD the first boot device and the hard disk the second boot device.
After installing XP, if you wish you can go back into the BIOS and change the boot order to boot from the hard disk first.
Chuck,
The 6 beeps are an error code. You should note a pattern such as 3 beeps, short pause, 1 beep, short pause, 2 beeps. Also, you may have a set of 4 error indicators on the back of the unit that will show a pattern of green and yellow lights. In any case, you will want to try to run the Dell diagnostics. Let us know the beep pattern and the light pattern and we should be able to give you some more specific information.
