SOURCE: Need to replace Lid Switch for Maytag Atlantis 2002 Washer

Hello, I can help you.

Let me explain to you how the Maytag washer lid switch works.
The lid switch is located on the controls panel, and is activated by opening and closing the washer door. The purpose of the lid switch is to prevent the washer from working with the door open.

It is a safety device to prevent the user from sticking their hands inside of the washer while the washer is agitating or spinning.

When the washer lid switch stops working, the result could be that the washer won't wash, drain, spin and in some cases the washer will not work at all.

You will need a multimeter to check the internal contacts on the washer lid switch.

You will also need to use the wiring schematic to see what contact should be close when the lid switch supposed to be on.

You will need to remember that the Maytag washer lid switch is one of the first parts that you will need to check, when the washer don't want to start filling, agitating, draining or spinning.

SOURCE: maytag atlantis washer got water leaking from

I have an Atlantis myself. There can be several problems. Did you check that the fill hoses in the back are not leaking? Are they tight? There are hoses inside the washer and a pump near the front. I replaced my pump last year and I,m getting ready to replace the thrust bearing assembly (spin issues). Does the washer leak with every load? make sure water is not splashing over the tub when filling. The front panel comes off if you can and leave off and watch to see where water is coming from.

SOURCE: washer makes loud grinding noise during agitation

I suspect the thrust bearing kit is bad. This comes with great instructions and is easily replaced. I would recommend changing this before replacing the machine. You are not out much if it does not work, but I am confident you will get it going by replacing this! This is a VERY common problem with these washers and the new kit has been redesigned.

Maytag atlantis washer doesnt spin on spin cycle, also found plastic shavings in clothes, appear to be coming from the top outer edge of the tub, a white plastic trim piece. wash cycle seems to work fine...

There can be several causes, the drum off balance would cause the shavings during spin cycle , balance could be one of the the balancing mechanism failed and not running could be the balance sensor shutting down the spin cycle. You should start by checking the balance shocks .

Machine will not start

THE MOST COMMON THING WITH THIS WASHER IS THE LID SWITCH. THERE IS A TEMPORARY & EASY WAY TO FIGURE THIS OUT. FIRST OPEN THE LID. LOOK AT THE BOTTOM JUST A LITTLE RIGHT OF CENTER WHEN THE LID IS UP. DO YOU SEE A LITTLE WHITE PLASTIC PIECE? THIS IS THE STRIKE FOR THE SWITCH. IF IT IS MISSING YOU NEED THAT. IF IT IS THERE LOWER YOUR LID SLOWLY UNTIL CLOSED ALL THE WAY. LISTEN TO HEAR A CLICK WHEN DOING THIS. A CLICK WILL DETERMINE IF THE SWITCH IS BEING ACTIVATED AND THE POSSIBILITY THAT IT IS GOOD. IF YOU HEAR THIS CLICK AND THE WASHER WILL NOT START THEN YOU MAY HAVE A TIMER ISSUE. IF YOU HAVE NO CLICK THEN CONTINUE. UNPLUG WASHER. REMOVE THE 3 SCREWS AT THE TOP OF THE CONSOLE. WITH ONE HAD ON THE CONSOLE TOP CENTER STARTED TO PULL FOREWARD. PUSH BACK AT THE BOTTOM CENTER WITH THE OTHER HAND. THE LID SWITCH HAS 2 RED, 2YELLOW, 2 WHITE AND 1 BLACK WIRE TO IT. UNPLUG THIS. ON THE BACK LEFT CORNER OF THE LID SWITCH THERE IS A LOCK TAB. WITH ON HAND LIFT THE WASHER LID UP 3 INCHES OR SO. WITH THE OTHER HAND LIFT THE LOCK TAB ON THE LID SWITCH WHILE PULLING FOREWARD ON IT. PUL LID SWITCH OUT AND PUSH THE PLUNGER IN. DOES IT CLICK? IF YES THEN FIND A VERY TINY SCREW TO SCREW IN THAT END OF THE PLUNGER. YOU ONLY NEED TO EXTEND THAT PLUNG LESS THAN 1/8 TO 3/32NDS OF AN INCH. YOU CAN ALSO GLU SOMETHING TO IT. REASSEMBLE ONCE THIS IS DONE.

Maytag washer #A882 Washer fills, but will not agitate. Can hear timer run and after numerous tries of unplugging and slamming the lid, it agitates. My husband doesn't think it's the lid switch. Could it...

Open the lid and in the middle pull the cap off the top off the agitator.
Then remove the little plastic piece, and you should see a 1/2 nut and some little plastic teeth that when the unit is running it locks into those.
Verify by turning with your hand that they are not striped out, If they are then you will need to replace those. If its not agitating it will be more Technical to diagnose.

Also make sure the screw is tight.

Good Luck!

Will not start wash cycle

Sound like the lid switch has went out , you should hear it click when the lid is close to an inch of being closed , they are un-expensive and easy to replace and they go out often from use. Easy to find online with your real model number located under the lid.

The washer with the grind noise is a main bearing going out and may be covered under warr. through maytag.

Maytag Atlantis washer will not drain and spin unless you lift the lid

The cheaper thing to check first is is your lid bent? The lid switch is in the center of the lid. If it "droops" or has been bent, it shaft on the back of the lid cant hit the switch. Open the lid and apply pressure in the bottom, center of the lid. This usually corrects the problem without replacing the switch.
