The no start on the first try could be low fuel pressure. The check valve in the pump may be letting fuel drain back into the tank, or the pump relay may be bad. The pump gets power from the relay when you turn the key on, then from the oil pressure switch once the engine starts. How do you get the interior lights to go off ?

check the fuel filter it sounds like it's pluged and causing too much back presure this is causing an over load in the fuel pump causing it to stop working or to presure lock
Check the water supplies at the back, if the valve is opening, and the
water is getting into the machine, it can be a faulty water level
switch, or membrane sensor, depending on the model.
A faulty or clogged inlet valve can also close few seconds from opening the valve, usually becausu of a faulty solenoid.
If valve and water level switch are ok, then this is a faulty control.
