All of the answers are great, but try finding the solution in the user's manual before you contact the service: Brother mfc 5890cn manual

Open the scanner lid and close it again. this way you get a "reset" of error code and he continues to wok again.

SOURCE: Error message 50

Confirm Success on a 440CN

1) Remove Plastic wire covers from inside printers, and release plastic stay on lower edge, tilt cover to 90 Degrees
2) make a note of where each connector goes
3) release the Ribbon and 3 Multicore cables, removing grounding screw, then remove scanner module by sliding it off the hinges at 90 degrees.
4) Remove Three Front Panel Screws, carefully leaver front panel upwards releasing front side clips.
5) Remove front panel by disconnecting ribbon and wireing on both sides.
6) Remove 6 Screws (2 on back, three at front and one middle right
7) Carefully remove speaker cable (Red Connector) and lift up plastic casing, leaving printer uncovered.
8) Re-Seat Encoder Strip into guide. (The Transparent strip)
9) Re-assemble in reverse and Hey Presto.

All Cured. Hopefully!

SOURCE: my printer brother DCP115C ''UNABLE TO CLEAN error code 50''

Machine error 50 is a error in Purge unit. You can't fix it by yourself and your printer need service. In most case the cost of repair is more than cost of new printer.

SOURCE: Unable to Clean 4F

Hi there
With some Brother printers you can try this.

Access the internal maintenance mode by pressing the Menu/Set button, then press * 2 8 6 4 within 2 seconds. This should put you in the maintenance mode menu. Enter 80, and then scroll down with the arrow down (round) key. You'll find an entry listed as purge count. If number is over 6000, enter 2 7 8 3.

This will reset the purge count value. Then the printer will restart, hopefully without the annoying cannot clean message.

Some times this happens because of using cheap compatible ink cartridges if this is the case change the ink cartridges.

Please come back and just gave a vote, it will gave me some satisfaction to know am helping some one so I will keep on helping.

Print Unable 50 Brother MFC5460 CN

So dont let me be a withness of murderer:
There is no paper sicking within the machine! The jam had lifted the encoder strip out of the ph. After you have fixed it simppy stick some very thin scotch tape onto the ph cover to avoid further liftings (that will happen quite often...)
