I was watching a vdv for about 40 minutes, when suddenly the tv switched off compleatly and kind of whistled like a kettle
i'm assuming this whistle was some kind of warning sound. it came as a broken signal that became faster, and then slowed some
after, maybe 30 second of trying to switch the telly back on, it very occasionaly switches off to standby by itself, i noticed smoke coming from the back. i paniced, because i know that old CRT's can be lethel should hey decide to explode or break in any way, i ran outside, and i started to smell solder burning
i wound up flicking my trip switch. funny think it, i don't think the telly itself overheated or even became warm
the telly is pluged into an 8 way multi plug, which in turn is plugged into a hard to reach socket. my trip switch would not turn of with this pluged in, half an hour later. i didn't try just unplugging the telly and trying the switch. plugging the telly of doesn't seem to activate my sensetive trip switch nor blow the plug fuse
slthough the room has been fully ventinated all day, my back door which is right by the telly hads been open, i seem to still be able to smell the burning, though this may be my imagination
the whistling effect only seems to take place when the telly is switched on, i'v tried twice since and i think this time round it actualy wanted to try and switch on, but the whistle started about two seconds later. i don't want to risc turning it on long enough to see if i can generate more smoke, but the whistle sugests that it would
so what do i do from hear. i don't realy want to replace the telly for a number of reasons; i've only had it a small time, i really like the quality and its size would make it a pain to mess around with. the telly cost me about £50 gbp
so is there as easy fix? do i call an electrition out or do i cound my losses and try again?
if it makes any diference, i describe the tone that comes from the telly as a whistle partly because of the tone, but also when i unplugged the telly hilst it was on, rather then cutting off, it made a sound like a record stopping quite fast
many thanks in advance for anu suggestions
