It was a gift for sister about a year ago. I reset the battery once, and charged over night. Next day fully charged the power drained very, very quickly. What can I do please?
Hopefully, this answer is too late, and you resolved the problem. But someone else may find this information helpful.
If you are charging from a laptop or power strip or are using a third-party adapter, you the tablet may not be fully charging. I understand from readings online that low voltage output (< 2.5, laptop or third-party adapter) is a common cause of software power management.
Samsung CRM is very good and walked me through a diagnostic and power cycling instructions.
EQUIPMENT: Manufacturer's USB cord and wall adapter SYMPTOMS: (a) dark screen or intermittent battery charge indicator; (b) tablet does not respond to "hard reset" (HOLD PWR + VOL button 10 sec. RELEASE PWR, hold VOL 10 sec.) This launches tablet's SYSTEM RECOVERY MENU; or (c) battery is completely discharged, insufficient power ON or OFF.
SOLUTION:
1. Disconnect USB power supply. Wait 60 sec.
2. Re-connect USB cord, plug wall adapter in wall socket for 1 hour (approx. 20% charge up)
3. Disconnect USB power supply then do "hard reset."
4. SYSTEM RECOVERY MENU display:
Press the Volume Up or Down button to select "wipe data/factory reset", and then press the Power button to make your selection.
Press the Volume Up or Down button to select "Yes - delete all user data" (Factory Settings), and then press the Power button to make your selection. When the reset is complete, press the volume Up or Down button to select "reboot system now", and then press the Power button to make your selection.
5. Power OFF tablet.
6. Re-connect USB cord and supply. Charge 3 - 4 hours.
##
Tablet should then turn on promptly at 100% charge. Over the next couple of days, repeat Steps 5, 6 when battery indicator is no less than 15%. This cycling re-sets software baseline (minimum operating charge level).
Best wishes
First go to a mobile shop ask hif it it is the problem of battry or some hardware problem inside the tab and also check the charger weather it works or not

Hello Sir !! I am afraid to tell that your battery might be got damaged by over charging.Electronic devices must be unplugged when the icon comes "Battery is Full" or like wise.Over charging damages the efficiency and produces extra heat that reduces the strength of charged battery.I suggest you to unplug the tab as soon as it got charged. It might increase your battery timings. If this information was helpful please rate or token of appreciation will be esteemed.
SOURCE: How do I know when my Samsung Galaxy Tablet is
The Tab takes quite a long time to charge (not sure why). Note that the Tab cannot charge from a computer USB port (only from the included AC adapter. When the Tab has finished charging, it should put out a notification (open the notification drawer by pulling down on the status bar) saying the battery is fully charged and to unplug the charger. Other than that, you would have to install a third-party app like Smart Battery Monitor (see here) and watch that to see when it is full.
Hope this helps,
Alistair

Hi buckpot2001,
To correct this issue, please follow the steps below.
1. Press and hold down the power button whilst at the same time touching the screen (you may have to wait up to 30 seconds as it clears the system).
2. You will then notice the battery indicator pops up.
3. The Tablet will then reboot. Everything goes back to normal.
4. If that fails to work, connect the power cable and repeat the above steps.
Hope it helps.
Thank you for using FixYa.
SOURCE: why is there a red cross on the battery icon of galaxy tab though its fully charged?
I studied my galaxy note 10.1. when i use the original wall charger it charges well, fast an no red cross appears. when i hook it to the usb of my laptop then the red cross apears and the tab reports that it is not on battery ( look at the time on battery it does not change) the battery also remains at the same charge level that it was when i hooked it up. when i use the car charger it does the same as with the laptop. my conclusion is that when hooked to the car and/or laptop the battery does not charge, but the tablet is running of the power from the external source and not the battery. this seems to be a very clever move from samsung to preserve the battery when it cannot be charged by the device it is hooked up to.

Hold down power up button until it starts. It can take up to 30 seconds before it restarts.
