Maytag refrigerator not cooling-freezer is fine.
If you found ice in the freezer then there is usually a lot more behind the back plate. If you let it defrost completely it should work good for a couple days until the ice builds up again. you more than likely have a deefrost issue. There are usually nthree components in a typical defrost circiut. The heater, defrost thermostat and a defrost timer or control. one or those is bad.

Just additional clues..(general). The defrost timers (on non-electronic) usually located at the bottom (underneath), have a tendency to fail. (One of mine is in the center, one was on the left side) There are usually about 5 wires connected to it. If it fails while defrosting.. the fridge will warm quickly and stop cooling, if it fails in cooling mode, you will have the icing up problem. (other) A squealing noise is usually a fan motor. -also- (Freon issues)..as freon is lost from a small leak, first the freezer will actually get colder, but the refrigerator section may be too warm (I know it sound stupid). When enough is lost the compressor will get hot and the fridge will not cool.

Setting it to 5 is what the manufacturer recommends. If you set it to 1 and the frig is still not cold, then you probably have a faulty cold control (thermostat)

I can help you diagnose the problems with your GE. Several things can cause these symptoms. All you need is a voltage meter patience and a want to, to repair and do it better than a paid technician. In most cases with the PSS26MSRSS the defrost heater is the cause for this. Look into rear of your freezer and back wall. Is Ice or frost building on rear wall? If yes unplug and prepair to remove contents in freezer compartment. Remove rear panel in freezer and use hair dryer to defrost ice until the defrost heater is visible. BRB , Sea Breeze
Testimonial: "Thanks for the quick help - yes frost on back wall. Once I unload and defrost should I then take out defrost thermostat? "
