My HP Laser Jet 3300 constantly makes noise. It sounds like the scanner is continually trying to start scanning. While the noise is going, it will print from the computer, but it won't scan or copy. When we unplug it, the noise stops for a short period of time. Then it returns.
I had the same problem. After updating a hp firmware, so far so good. The noise is gone.

That is the link for the 3330. It is under the downloads section and is at the bottom. They refer to it as firmware

Same problem, printer makes noise like scanner is adjusting. It will not stop!
same problem - scanner sems to be hitting something that makes it return to origin - moving perhaps a couple of inches. what gives? this has to be a mechanical thing that something is getting in its way. I do not want to send it to the landfill if it is a simple fix.
please advise at [email protected] my work email. thanks Jack

My HP 3320 just developed this problem in December 2007. The scanner bulb stays on and it moves back and forth a few inches constantly. I can not find anything on the HP site that provides a solution so far.
It's been a year since these people posted these problems and still no response. I was hoping to get answers myself. I guess this website is just to vent and let your frustrations out. It should be called FrustrateYa.
