I am assuming that "breadth" means the vertical height. It is a common problem, associated with 2 components. Either the Vertical Output IC and/or the vertical yoke coupling capacitor. Locate a schematic, locate the Vertical output IC, order the replacement IC from a parts distributor like MCM Electronics or equivalent and replace it. this means the TV having picture upper part of the screen. problem may be -15 V to vertical deflection ic suddenly gose off and system control gose to stand-by mode resolder vertical out ic , -15 v supply line from the fly back and system control .

Sounds like something is getting hot causing voltage loss or drive pulse loss to the vertical IC. Maybe you have a bad solder joint. Try tapping the circuit board around the vertical section.
