How do I remove the cover of the Brother PC-420 sewing machine?

When I try to sew, I get the error message: "The safety device has been activated" and the hand wheel on the right will not rotate. I've tried everything I can without removing the cover and would like to look inside to see if there are any obvious jams. Thanks!

Thanks, Tim - I had already seen that page and neither of their solutions help with my problem. Do you know how to remove the sewing machine case? Thanks again!

I don't - not without it sitting in front of me. Are there any visible screws on the outside? If so, LOOSEN them but DO NOT remove them until you determine for SURE that their removal is necessary to open the shell. I'd hate for something hanging from them to drop down inside. Next, look for seams in the shell. Very often, a shell like that is held together at the seams with little "handgrip" hooks cast right into the shell. If you shape your hand as if it were holding a bucket (no thumb), that's very much like the shape of the hooks I'm referring to - they hold only by virtue of the springiness of the case material. You MAY be able to find some place where you can carefully pry the case apart at the seam, particularly if you press inward on one shell half while tugging outward on the other shell half to release the hook. If you can get ONE to release (perhaps in the least obtrusive spot), you'll see how they're shaped and function, and how to release the rest of them. All the hooks may be on one side of the shell (most often), or the hooks may alternate directions. Oh, and... feel all labels carefully - a manufacturer will often hide screws behind labels, and you can feel them as hollow, "squishy" spots in the label.

Brother PC-420 sewing machine wont switch on at all.

Take off the slide plate and reseat the bobbin case. Can you turn the handwheel by hand now? If not, you may have a thread jam that seized the machine causing the security device to activate to prevent further damage. This doesn't seem like a situation that would fry a board, but if it moves freely, but still won't turn on; take it to a technician or return it.

Machine locked up with needle down in the machine

If you can, try to remove the needleplate and the bobbin case from the machine. Once the bobbin case is removed, the needle should be free.

There's a grinding sound whenever I press the needle position button & the error message "The safety Device have been activated" pops up on the screen

Sounds like the shuttle needs to be cleaned.

Turn off the power and open the needle plate.

Remove the bobbin and bobbin case.

Clean the area from lint and any thread that may be trapped.

Brother SE-350 "The safety device has been activated"

Return the bobbin winding shaft on the top right of the machine to the Left Position. It may be stuck in the middle.

Error message on Brother SE-270D sewing machine

The safety device will activate if the machine has a bind or is unable to run at correct speed. If you turn the handwheel is it tight/hard to turn? if it is than thats it. Now what is binding the machine has to be diagnosed.

Brother 2001 sewing and embroidery machine.

The fact that your machine is turning hard says you still have some thread inside the machine that is binding up and activating the safety device. It must turn easily before it will work properly again.
Sometimes the machine must be disassembled to remove these threads.
