What is the cost of the of having a person replace a capacitator on an Amercan Standard furnace

Most of that charge (the $200.00) was likely the service call itself. IF you don't have a maintenance agreement with these folks they charge an arm and a leg for service calls. The fan will be much more pricey than the capacitor, and you will certainly get another service call charge. You may want to ask about a maintenance agreement at that time. Some places will waive the service charge if you purchase one. Then you basically get the semi-annual servicing for the same price as you would have paid just to have the blower replaced (depending on the contract cost)..

How do you test a 1kvolt ceramic capacitor?

Hi Mixers,
You can test a 1kvolt ceramic capacitor;
a) using a capacimetre; replacing with other one of the same type; connecting it in a 12V oscillator circuit with a LED as output wich shall blink in a frequency determined by the capacitance, says, fast with low capacitance and slow with high capacitance. Normally ceramic HV capacitors are of small capacitance for use in high switching circuits or as a protection of a power switching transistors in modern power supplies

AV-36980, c926 blown

Electrolytic "CAN" type caps fail for several reasons. 1. over voltage stress. 2. polarity reversal. 3. over current stress. These three things are caused by other components that have also failed or partially failed either before or after C926. Check the rectifier circuit and or the horizontal deflection circuit which gets it's filtered DC voltage from C926. louie12fix on fixya.

It is not heating food.

I'd suspect the following to be at fault.

1. The Diode, easy to replace and easy to test. Not user servicable though.
2. The capacitator is no longer capable of storing a charge, easy to test, easy to replace. Warning: All capacitators must be properly discharged before working on them. Serious injury can result otherwise. This too is not user servicable.

3. The magnatron - same as the above, not user servicable but fairly easy to test and replaced. You can use a multi-tester, ohmmeter/voltmeter

I will say, the least likely is the magnatron and the most likely is the Diode. Capacitators and magnatrons do not die to easily.
