We moved into our house in October and for a while the fridge was turned off along with the ice maker inside. When we turned it on it was running fine and we threw away the first few batches of ice. Then it seemed fine. However, we occassionally and now more often get these little pieces of what looks like clear tape with dust stuck to it in our ice. It's so ***** but we cannot figure out how to change the filter or if we can even still buy one for a fridge from 96. Is there a way to just clean the piping myself? How can I change the filter?
Thank you for your post, friend!
I understand that you are getting debris along with your ice that is coming from your Frigidaire refrigerator. I would be unable to provide you directions on how to clean out the piping for your refrigerator but if you have the model number I can check to see what kind of information is available regarding the filter. You can normally locate the serial tag (which lists your model number) on the inside cabinet of the fresh food compartment normally on the left side of a top mount. On a side by side it can be found on the right hand side. I look forward to your response. -Matt
SOURCE: refrigerator side freezing
kjn, I think what happened here is that the automatic damper assy. is stuck in the open position. This is why everything froze in the refer area. This includes the water filter and cartridge. I would unscrew the filter cover and see if it's frozen in there. If you find the filter frozen, take a hair dryer and go over it lightly until it will unscrew. After that you will have to check to see if the damper is stuck. You should be able to hear it open and close by turning the control on and off. Or get a mirror and hold it at an angle in back to see the gates. Part number for the damper motor is 240440701. Not that hard of a job...Catriver.

If the frost build up is on the back panel of the freezer then it has a defrost problem which causes a no cool situation. Let me know more about this frost buildup and what you have done.
SOURCE: Not making ice
the icemaker is not making ice,In the bottom of refridegerator you can see some coils and they are iced over bad.
SOURCE: Frigidaire fridge leaks where ice maker is on
Your leaking problem gives two possibilities. The water control valve for the ice maker side is defective and while shut off the water will continue to slowly flow and leak into the freezer compartment. The other possibility id the condensate defrost drain is blocked and frozen over behind the rear panel of the freezer and at the bottom of th coils. I believe your defrost condensate drain has a blockage of ice and will need to be defrosted and clean the condensate line from the freezer to the condensate collection plate below your refrigerator. Most times the blockage begins slowly until the opening of the drain hole under the evaporator freezes itself shut. Below is a link to some solutions I have collected over a period of time. Also has a short movie that makes the repair look simpler. There are many reasons for this happening for example water leaking from a water supply line for the dispenser or ice maker, a crack in the defrost pan, water leaking inside and draining through the refrigerator cabinet, but most are caused by a defrost drain line blockage. Below is a link that may be helpful so try to take it all in and use the parts that most refer to your specific problem, Thanks Sea Breeze
