Question about Invacare Pronto M51 Power Wheelchair

On Invacare Pronto M51 I get a 6 blink error code indicating a right parking brake motor fault. I am not sure what this is. I think it is the brake associated with the motor that engages when the motor slows or stops. how do i access this / check it or fix it. I have seen other wheechair motor brakes and they arec easily accessible but this one seems hidden.

If you have made sure that the freewheel levers are in the drive position and after turning the power on and you are still getting the barke error then the motor and brake assembly will have to be checked by a tech and possibly have to be replaced There is no self fix for your problem Sorry Hope this helps you

Yellow blinking light what does this mean on pronto M41 invacare?


The AMBER service indicator will light when an error or fault occurs. This is a yellow wrench shape. Refer to Diagnostic Codes on page 33 for a listing of the flash codes and what they indicate:

I have an error code 5 on invacare pronto 51 surestep


This indicates a fault with the left parking brake. Check to see that all the connections are tight by unplugging, and replugging them in, check to see if there is any damage to any of the cables, but first, make sure that the neutral lever on the motor is fully engaged in the drive position...sometimes these get bumped and the controller/computer thinks the chair is out of gear. Move the lever to the full neutral position/out of gear, then reengage it to the drive position.

3 blinks is a right motor fault on a Pronto M51. Check that the motor plug has not come unplugged from the main control box or that any of the wires have been broken, cut or pulled out of the right motor.

Hi..I did like you said and it worked for two minuets and now the yellow led flashes 4 times on my Pronto 91. could you tell me what that error code means.


This is a common problem with the M91 when the motors are more than several years old.
An error code of 4 flashes indicates a right motor fault. The right motor could have a short or open circuit, or a bad connection.
Check the right motor, connections and motor cable visually and with a voltmeter at the connector. Look for cuts, nicks and breaks in the wiring and for grease oozing out of the gearbox. Flip the seat back and remove the top cover. Disconnect the black square right motor plug and check the resistance across the red and black motor wires using a digital volt meter. 0 to 1.6 ohms is OK, anything out of this range is suspect.
If the motors are more than 3 years old, you should consider replacing the motor/brake/gearboxes as a pair, left and right. The motor/brake is about $650 with the motor/ brake/ gearbox assembly about $1,000 per side. Labor is 2 to 3 hours total. I usually replace the brake/motor/gearbox as a complete assembly to avoid future problems. Hope this helps.

Wwe have a pronto m41 mobility chair.the service indicator light is telling me its a right brake problem can i fix this and how. also the led lights are chasing left to right. i have to get this working...


First thing you must know is that the error codes are reversed on Pronto chairs with SPJ+ joysticks.
Only one year the M41 was made that the codes were correct. From approximately April 2008 to May 2009 was the only time a left error code ment left motor and a right code ment a right motor. Same for brake codes.
Brakes codes happen when the brake is out of gear, unplugged from the control brain or wire cut. Also from internal coil damage. Unless it's a wire you can reconnect you cannot fix the brake.

claxtonbrent That is the error code for a bad right brake and it will have to be replaced. There is no quick fix for this problem. It requires a new brake and I'm not sure if you can replace just the brake Usually when I get this and Medicare is paying for the repair I have to order a right motor/gearbox assembly. you can contact Invacare @ 1-800-333-6900 ask for M51 tech support and ask if you can replace just the brake Hope this helps

Sometimes, out of the blue, when i snap on my M91 and touch the joystick, i will here a faint click and the power display will start blinking. the machine will NOT move. any ideas?


With the M91 the click you are hearing is the electric brake solenoid engaging and disengaging the electro mechanical brake. The display blinking probably indicates a brake solenoid fault code and right or left motor. Try working both brake levers back and forth listening for and feeling for smooth action. If the levers are bent and the brakes are not working a motor replacement is necessary. If you can identify the fault flash code you can determine which brake or motor is the culprit and use a DVM to verify the component failure.

I believe this fault code indicates a left parking brake fault. Check all the connections from the motor/gear/brake assembly on BOTH motors (sometimes the controller gets confused). Follow the wires from the motor to the controller and reconnect them all. Make sure the free-wheel lever is in gear by taking out of gear, and placing back into gear firmly.

Won't move pronto m51


Three lights flashing on your chair indicate a left motor fault. Make sure that all of the connections inside the shroud are tight by physically testing them. If all of the connections are good, and the fuses are good, then it's time for a trip to an authorized repair facility. Here is a link to the M51 owners manual if you haven't one. Page 24 has the fault code guide.

The controller monitors all of the functions on the chair, brakes, motors, joystick, charger etc. The three flash fault indicates an "open" circuit. Open, like a switch or blown fuse is open, or a wire is cut or burned in half, or a connector is unconnected, or partially connected. The latter is what you are hoping for. Wires burned in half is the usual cause for a motor fault, and with powerchairs, is usually the result of the chair getting stuck in or against something it can't get out of and the operator over-amping the motors. Motors do, just go bad sometimes, for no reason. Very rarerly, however.

You can also check the brushes on the motor too. There's two quarter-sized black plastic screw-plugs on the ends of the motor opposite each other. Unscrew them and examine the brushes. The springy coils should be springy. Overheating can cause them to be brittle, or even burned in two. Check the lench of the brush, the dark rectangular cube at the end of the springs. It should be curved and polished at the end, and a little over a half-inch long. If it is near a 1/4 inch, it needs replaced, or if there is any evidence of overheating, replace. Good luck.
