The bobbin spindle needs to be moved to the left in the slot to disengage the winding mechanism. (It may be easier to do this with the bobbin on the spindle. The bobbin and spindle should be moved to the right after putting the bobbin on for winding.)
Here is the link to the manual for the Bernette and it shows how to install and use the walking foot. Good luck with this! THe Bernina is a great machine.
try a new needle--one that is for the fabric being sewed then try to adjust the top thread tension again, if the stitches remain loose and the tension won't adjust then the tension knob needs to be checked to see if there is something wrong with it. also check to make sure the bobbin is inserted correctly into the bobbin case, if the bobbin is not turned the right way in the bobbin case the sewing machine will not stitch correctly.
Are you sewing through elastic such as joining the two ends of a loop of elastic in a waistband?
If so, just your straight stitch or three step zig zag works fine.
If you are actually seaming on knit fabrics then you need a stitch with forwards and backwards movement to allow the fabric to give when worn without breaking the thread in the seam.
If this is your machine and you want to stich jersey or knits, I'd use the overcasting stitch, fifth from the right. or the tricot stitch to the right of it, this stitch is good for attaching rib trim around necks and sleeves.
Your sewing machine manual should also give you information on which stitch is used for what. I also like the Singer Sewing Manual book for good general sewing information.
