This is cause by minor discrepancies in the printhead. Normally this is caused by blocked jets on the inkjet printhead. Depending on the extent of the lines it may only be one jet blocked or more if there are lots of noticable lines.
Try doing a printhead clean to clear the jets and check the print quality printout.
Due to the way these machines print it could also be just as simple as the normal printing discrepancy. These machines are cheap and made that way. If you are looking for solid black in the black areas then you may need to change the settings on the printer to photo quality or replace the cheap brother with a more expensive machine.

It will sleep from no activity, but you can turn it off by holding down the On/Off button. If you get a "busy try later" message, try pushing the Stop button. You'll know you're turning it off if you get a message "All fax related data will be deleted. OK?"
