AC mode works perfectly. Heating element work perfect but the compressor does not join the heat coil in the heating mode.
Maybe the power wire in unplugged . There is a thing with 4 way out in to the next compressor look like cylinder ,,, this thing have 2 wire , both of them should connect

If the compressor is off and the heat coil is on - this is normal for the "E" or emergency heat setting. Check for proper connections between the Heat-pump, furnace(heat source) and the thermostat and that the thermostat is capable of controlling a heat-pump with secondary/emergency heat units. Thermostats designed for this have 4 settings: Cool / off / heat / E(emergency heat). in the "heat" setting, both the Heat-pump and Aux heat work together to maintain temperature. In the "E" setting, only the Aux heat source is used. The "E" setting should only be used in extreme cold - when the Heat-pump can no longer produce heat.

The LG>LW5200ER AC is not listed as a heat providing unit. Click on link and this will give you the spec's http://www.epinions.com/pr-LG_LW5200ER_Air_Conditioner Hope this helps.

Try using a garden hose to wash down the condensor coil (the coil that is exposed to the outside air).
During the cooler times when it seems to be working, check the temperature difference of the air coming out against the temperature of the air coming in (room temperature air). The temperature should be approximately 16 to 22degF difference. If you are not getting at least 16degF air, you most likely need to have your unit serviced to see if professionial cleaning or a recharge is needed. If you are getting the temperature difference but not getting the amount of cooling you need during hot weather, it could be a capacity problem. You can perform a quick test by using the calculator on this site:

I hope you find this information helpful. Good Luck! :-)

You should also check the outside unit to make sure the coil is not clogged with dirt or grass clippings and the fan is working. The reversing valve that switches it from cool to heat could also be a problem. If it isn't shifting it will not switch between heat and cool.

Check temp setting and also room sensor. Setting must be minimum 3 degree more than room temp. Check continuity for sensor. If open replace it. Check coil , air filter and heater element are cleaned.
If high amps, replace heating element. Thanks.

This could be any number of problems depending on whether this unit is a heat Pump or not. It sounds like it is a heat pump, if so it should have a defrost board or Control of some type. They also usually have a defrost or ice sensor on the outdoor Refrigerant coil. When ice or heavy frost is detected it puts the unit into defrost. This Could be why your unit is cycling off, the sensor could be bad or the board could be Bad. Also be sure your air filters are clean and the indoor and outdoor refrigerant Coils are clean. This may require you to remove the unit and hose it out.
