IBM Wheelwriter 5. Beeps once when turned on, then 3 line space lights (1, 1.5, and 2) flash continuously. I can move the carriage manually and when the typewriter is turned off and back on, the carriage will move itself back to the starting position. I have checked for debris around the carriage and the printwheel and replaced the batteries. Any ideas?

Perhaps the L. Mar. is set there. Turn it on wait for the por sequence to complete, touch the mar rel key, back space to the far left, press L. mar key. If that dosen't do it tou must have some lights flashing and/or beeping, What lights and how many beeps?
A lot of possibilities Which lights, beeps, how many? Check for debris in and around the printwheel, look for any obstructions under the carrier, put a few drops of oil on the silver shaft the carrier ride on.
Will the carrier move yo the rt. with power off ? Try a little WD40 on the silver shaft that runs thru the carrier. Look for foreign objects and debris inside the t/w.
