If I let the memory release and stay in the camera the format card icon functions and when I close the hatch I come back to the same problem.

If this problem is dealing with an SD-Card, there should be a little switch on the side of it. Just switch it off of lock. It worked for me.

if your old card is working and the new card isn't chances are they are not compatible.
just like what they would say... we know that manufacturers would say.. it should work, if it doesn't try another one.
if both cards are not working them there is something wrong with the camera.

Normally that means your card is locked.
Look at the side of the card, there is a tiny switch - this is the write protection switch.
You may be catching it accidently with a finger nail.

SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card. If the switch is already in the proper position, slide it fully the other way and then back again.
