This is reasonably easy to do. Does the Generator run? Start the generator as it's running turn the fuel Petcock to the Off position. The generator should stall and stop running. This helps safely empty the fuel line and carburettor between the tank and the engine.
Disconnect the fuel line from the petcock tap and plug the ends to stop dirt getting in. On each corner of the tank itself there should be a bolt going through the ribbed edge and a rubber spacer. remove these 4 bolts and the tank should lift up and out. On some generators you might have to remove some trim panels to make it easier.
Refitting is the exact opposite of this.

Check air filter is clean. Check the governor linkages are moving ok. The carburettor jets may have become coated with deposits of gum over time, reducing the fuel flow and weakening the mixture, especially if the carburettor has been allowed to dry out for a period. You will need to remove the jets and clean them with compressed air. There are proprietary cleaning solvents for doing this or you can use thinners. You need to be gentle with the jets though as they are easily scratched or bent.
When I have a problem starting an engine this is what I do.
Remove the spark plug and pour approx 5 ml (one teaspoonful) of fuel into the opening.
Dip the spark end of the plug into the fuel so the spark gap gets wet and replace the plug
Try starting the generator again.
The fuel that you poured in should ignite and may be enough to start the generator though you may need to repeat the process 2 to 3 times.
If the generator was not used for a few months and there was fuel left in the carburettor there may be a gel formed in the jets of the carburettor. If this is the case and the above method does not get the engine running you may need to get a mechanic to strip down the carburettor and clean it.
This can happen if there was fuel left in the carburettor for a few months. The fuel forms a gel in the jets which can block the fuel getting through. You could try the following procedure which might help get it going.
Remove the sparkplug.
Pour about 5ml (or 1 teaspoonful) of fuel into the opening, where the sparkplug came out of.
Dip the end of the spark plug in fuel so the spark gap gets wet and replace the plug and HT lead.
Try to start the generator. The fuel that you poured in should ignite. This might be enough to get the engine running. You may have to repeat the procedure 2 to 3 times. Don't be tempted to pour too much fuel in as it will cause the engine to flood.
If the jets are blocked in the carburettor this might be enough to **** the fuel through but if not you'll need to get a mechanic to strip down the carburettor and clean the jets.
The first thing to check is the spark plug, is it clean and properly "Gapped" next is are we actually getting spark, does the spark plug actually "Spark". Check. Check Spark Plug lead., Check connections. Do we have Fuel, Check .and Is the fuel getting to the Carburettor? Check. Check the battery. alternator, generator, is providing power. Check the Mixture.
