The player is set to a fixed region relevant to the country you are in for play back of DVD disks and the disk you are trying to play is not compatible with the country you are in! You need a multi region player or to have your current player unlocked to be multi region! Which country are you in?

1. Make sure there is no disc in the player.
2. Turn power off and on again.
3. Open the tray.
4. On the remote, hit 9879 and then 0. This changes unit to Region 0, meaning it'll play all regions.

SOURCE: Panasonic ES40v - Can't play DVD's - Incorrect region

I had the same trouble, also wouldn't play back discs that I recorded using it. The commonly listed reset of channel up and down at the same time was not meant for this model.
Below is the official solution that was sent to me by panasonic.
After using this method to reset my player it worked great. it was just like taking it out of the box for the first time.

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for your inquiry, reguarding model DMR-ES40V.

Try this reset to fix the issue.

1. Unit power must be on.

2. Press [STOP] & [VHS > DVD] ON THE UNIT for over 5 seconds.

Thank you for contacting Panasonic.

Thank You,

Incorrect disc region code

Look at the region code of the DVD that plays on the vehicle DVD if it is the same of the others that do play it's not a region code issue. If the others are a different region to the DVD that plays or the disc says it is region free. Then you might have a problem with the region code settings on the machine. You can look up the model number of that player to see if you can change the region code.
Otherwise check out the player to see if it needs cleaning or is faulty.

The dvd player says "incorrect

The DVD player is region locked and will only play DVDs from a particular region. The cheap DVDs are probably region 0 and so will work on any DVD player. You can scour the internet for a code hack to change the region (I've had a quick look and not found anything).
