The needle is not catching the thread from my bobbin. It doesn't seem as if the shuttle (or whatever it is called) is moving @ all.. @ first it seemed that the feed dogs were not able to move.
It sounds like you have a thread jam. Depending on the machine there may be lever that will release the bobbin shuttle, and another 2 levers to release the cover plate. Pay attention to positioning so you can put it back together. Remove the shuttle, then the bobbin cover and see if there are any knots of thread getting in the way.

Unplug the machine and remove the needle plate so that the bobbin case if fully exposed. Lift out the bobbin case and the cup that it sets in will be visible. Locate the "hook" on this cup. It is a finger with a sharp point at the upper edge of the cup. The hook is what grabs the thread from the needle while sewing.
If the hook passes by the needle AFTER the eye of the needle is above it, you timing has slipped and the machine must be taken in for repair.
If the hook catches the thread from the needle, put everything back together and try threading again.

Hi Jeanette! You have a Singer Featherweight--the best sewing machine ever made! (Mine dates from 1950/51 and I wouldn't trade it for the world.) These beautiful, sturdy machines were designed to be easily repairable at home, but you'll need a copy of the Service Manual (get the Instruction manual too, if you don't have one.) Go to www.singer-featherweight.com and check out what they have available.
I had a similar problem (needle thread not catching the bobbin thread) and the problem was that I hadn't put the needle in correctly (flat side to the left). Also, I will occasionally get thread wrapped around the bobbin housing--sewing along just great and then everything comes to a screeching halt. I'm not sure why that happens, but I'm getting pretty good at taking the bobbin housing apart. The manual is pretty clear on how to do it. You can contact me direct at [email protected] for more information.
Thanks!
Robbie
SOURCE: bobbin not taking up the thread
Thread the needle and pull out 6" of thread, hold the end of the thread, leaving the foot up, cycle the needle down and back up, you should have a loop of thread appearing under the foot and over the needle thread.
Slide something between the foot and the plate, from left to right this should pull the bottom thread up.
SOURCE: thread on sewing machine won't pick up bobbin thread
the bobbin case does not move, just the bobbin.. if the machine is still under warrenty, I would take it back & get another sewing machine,, and probably not from them
SOURCE: feeder dog is in reverse and thread won't feed through bobbin..
it would really be a good idea to have the machine serviced at a sewing
machine shop
