When I plug the drive into my laptop, there is a blue light, but nothing is registed on my computer, when I have gone into the disk management, it doesnt show anything for the drive and I have stuff on there that I need to get access to, please help?
Hello Stellafox,
The issue you describe is generally a simple hardware failure but without further diagnostics it would be impossible to advise you as to where the failure resides. If you are technically capable, follow the directions below, if you even have to consider how capable you are, take it to a repair shop and ask them to try these steps.
First, connect the device to a different computer, listen carefully for clicking scratching or ticking sounds, if you hear any report back including your country and state/province and I can recommend a nearby recovery facility. If not proceed to check within computer management(Windows) or in disk utility(Mac) to see if the device is registered. If not remove it from it's enclosure (voiding any warranty) and repeat this step. If the device does not show up on Disk Management on two or more devices, striped of it's enclosure, again refer back and I will recommend a data recovery facility near you.
If it shows up at either stage, the problem is most likely logical in nature, check the size of the drive and ensure it roughly matches the stated size(won't be exact). If it does but the partitions show up as RAW or UNALLOCATED, advise and I can recommend a software solution for recovering your files, if it does not show up or shows up in a place like Device Manager but either does not show up or shows up as 0GB and or Uninitialized but refuses to initialize, again hardware failure we can connect you with a pro.
If you are looking at a software solution, ensure the computer you are connected to has sufficient space to recover all of you files or purchase and connect a new drive of appropriate size before proceeding. We can recommend software for this purpose or if you'd prefer a company who can dial in remotely and assist you with the recovery process.
Of note if you got to the step where the drive is removed from the case and it not only showed up but also has access to your files, back them up to a second device then purchase a USB/eSATA enclosure to put the drive into as the failure was in the enclosure and not the drive.
If none of these steps work or you get very different results, report back, be specific and include all the details you can think of and we will help you assess your next diagnostic step.
Hope this helps,
Chris

HI Your Hard Drive is previously formatted and have done different partition provided by your previous machine where you took this hard drive from. Use "The Partition Magic" Software, it will help you to fix and repartition your hard drive in the new format. I have this problem before and now my hard drive can connect with any computer. The key in this issue is any hard drive goes with the original machine has been formatted and do its own partition from manufacturer so if you take it out later for use with other machine, you will need a software to completely rearrange the new partition in universal format so other computers can recognize it. This manufacturer purpose to protect your data from hacking, stealing once you take it out from the original machine. That is why when you connect it to other machine, this hard drive will not be recognized. I has this partition magic software and can make you a copy so you don't have to buy it. Just read the instruction and you can fix it for both 2.5" and 3.5" HD. Please email me at [email protected] and provide me your mailing address, I can send the copy software to you. Regards, pingping

Hi, What the message mean is that Windows can not read/understand the filing system (something like the Table of Contents in a book) and therefore do not which and where are your files in the 80Gb. A few things you can try: 1. Run Windows Scandisdk on the Hitachi 80Gb; 2. Run any third party disk check/utility such Norton Disk Doctor. Alternately, you can use a file recovery software (such as GetDataBack) to recover/copy all your important files from the 80Gb and transfer them to another mass storage device. Thereafter, you can re-partition and re-format the said Hitachi to start new/fresh/clean. Hope this be of some help/idea. Post back how things turnes up or should you need further information. Good luck and kind regards.

Hello
Okay , so there are some steps to figure out what is wrong with your external.
Firstly , if your computer makes a sound when you plug in your external , go to Start-Control Panel-Administrative Tools-Computer Management-Disk Management , and see if your external drive is listed here with your local drives. If it is listed , right click on the drive and change the drive letter to make it appear in "my computer".
If your drive does not make a connection sound when connecting to your computer and also does not show up , please follow the next step.
Remove the hard drive from the casing if possible and install it in your computer case or another external case.If the drive works , the problem is with the casing and you can ignore the drive.
Now , if the problem is with the casing , there are still 3 possibilities.
The latter is the easiest to diagnose , does your external light up at all when you plug in the power? If not , then this is probably your problem. On the bottom of the adapter is a label which you will be able to use to have a new adapter made at your local electronics shop and this will cost about $30 max. They will also be able to test the adapter with a clamp meter to see if this is really the problem and this should be free.
The second component you want to test is the USB cable. If you have a printer , swop out the cables and see if your printer functions normally. Most externals use the same connector so you should be able to test it in this manner. If the cable works go on to the last step. If the cable is defective , replace it with a new one which you can find for about $10 at most electronics and chain stores.
The last component to test is the circuit board. This is a bit of a grey zone as you probably won't be able to spot the blown component unless it failed really badly. With the casing already opened , locate the external's circuit board and check to see if you have any blackened components or fluids leaking from some components. If all the other components of the external worked perfectly , then this is the faulty part. It is not really economical to replace the circuit as most of the time it is out of production by the time you need to replace it and it still costs a lot even if it is available so if your drive is working perfectly when connected via sata or IDE on your computer , the best is to buy a new casing and place your old drive in the new casing.
A casing costs about $50 and you could get it at most tech shops and big chain stores like Best Buy.
I hope this solves your problem and please reply if you need more help.
Kind Regards
Andrea
