When I press the trigger the drill sometimes works but sometimes needs shaking or tapping to work.sometimes it stops during use and needs tapping again. The light always comes on when I press the trigger even if the drill doesn't work
My Makita drill just started having this same problem. I got out a voltmeter and opened up the side and tested the voltage going to the switch and to the motor. The switch was not sending power to the motor. You can order a new switch online for around $30, you can find the parts list by searching the Makita website for your model, then search for the part number on google to find a place to buy it. This question is a year old but maybe this will help someone else.
DC motor and switch not working pro pale it will happen.

Yes, you need to take the chuck and the collar off. Not bad though. Make sure you put the collar back on correctly. I think the switches on those have to be soldered, if I remember that model correctly. Be careful. You could ruin the main switch if you accidentally cross the circuit with the small resistor to other terminals. Lemme know. Please rate me.

The first thing to check is the battery: is it fully charged, are the contacts in good condidtion and do they make good contact with the contacts on the switch.
Next thing to check is the brushes. Remove the rear cover and check the brushes and springs that hold them down on the armature. If the brushes are worn to where they dont' make good contact or the springs are not holding them down with enough pressure they won't make good contact and sometimes a good hit will make them touch enough to work again. The brush part number is CB-440, if the springs are bad you have to replave the whold brush holder, part number 638614-1.

Check the brushes: they should be over 1/4" long, the springs should be intact and pushing the brushes into the armature and they should slide easily in the brush holder. Using a volt meter, check that you are getting full power to the switch. Next check that power is getting through the switch when the swtich is held on. If all of these check out you may have shorted or burnt windnigs on the armature or field.

I had exactly the same problem. Put brand new brushes in. That was over a year ago & I use my drill/driver every day.
