remove batteries. try and turn camera on, of course it wont work without batteries but this may clear any capacitors.now fit new batteries or just refit the old if you know they are good. and try again, does it work now?
Your battery is most likely dead to the point where it can no longer hold a charge, which is the reason that when you unplug it from the computer, it dies instanly. Batteries are pretty cheap going up to about as high as $25 and if you get it done at a ipod place, installation should not be that much.
The battery may show "full' but still not hold a charge, so that when you unplug it from your computer, it goes dead. I assume you hold down the power button for several seconds and it still doesn't power up? Most likely, you battery is defective.
