Check that water cut off is not sticking on.

Sounds like you have some sort of debris clogging the intake or it got past the intake. You will also get a burning smell if there's lots of lint etc., around any of the bearings. Take the unit apart to clean and inspect the motor and impeller.

all you have to do is open it up and take the paper filter off and then it's a wet vac. If it has a foam over filter you leave that on

Either you aren't getting the top on correctly so it will latch, or there maybe a problem with the latches. You should have a one year warranty on this, take it back to Sears and have them look at it.

It is supposed to have a round plastic plate and a plastic handle with a nut made in it that tightens against the plate to hold the filter on
