I have gotten two rude answers to my question which I do not appreciate. I have a new Twitter account and would like my old one deactivated. The problem is my old email address is no longer valid. I w

Deactivating your account

To deactivate your account:

1. Sign in to twitter.com on the web.
2. Go to your Account settings and click on Deactivate my account at the bottom of the page.
3. Read the account deactivation information. Click Okay, fine, deactivate account.
4. Enter your password when prompted and verify that you want to deactivate your account.

To deactivate your twitter account:

• Sign in to twitter.
• Go to your settings and click deactivate my account at the bottom of the page.
• Click Okay, fine, deactivate account.
• Enter your password when prompted and verify.

This will deactivate your account for 30 days after which your account will be permanently deleted. If you decide to keep your account you can reactivate it just by signing in within those first 30 days.

I'm assuming you're trying to sign up for a new Twitter account with a new email address? Unfortunately Twitter won't allow you to sign up for a new account with the same email address as the old account.
If you're trying with a new email address, it sounds like you have a cookie from Twitter that is "remembering" your old account. Try this: After deactivating your account again, go into your browser settings and delete your cookies. The instructions will vary based on the browser you're using, but below are the instructions for Internet Explorer.

• Go to Tools - Internet Options. If you don't see Tools, look for a gear icon in the upper-right of your browser window.
• On the General tab, click Delete.
• In the window that pops-up, make sure Cookies is checkmarked and click Delete.

How To Deactivate Your Twitter Account

Deactivating your account permanently removes your profile and information from Twitter. Deactivated profiles will take 30 days to clear from our internal systems. To deactivate your account:

1. Log in to Twitter
2. Click Settings from the drop-down menu at the top right of your Twitter account.
3. Click 'deactivate my account' at the bottom of the page (shown below).
4. Enter your password when prompted.
5. Verify that you really want to do it and voila, it's done.

To free up your username or email address before deactivating your account:

1. Go to your Settings page from the drop-down menu at the top right of your Twitter account.
2. In the username field, choose a new username (Try adding an underscore or a number to it).
3. In the email address field, change your email address to a new address you also own.
4. Confirm the new email address via a link we send to you (very important!).
5. Proceed with deactivation as listed above. Your email and username will now be free to use on a new account should you choose to sign up again during the 30 day deactivation period.

Note: we change your settings immediately, and any/all old links appearing in a Google or other search index thus lead to error pages. However, these old links appear because Google and other search engines have cached old content in their search index. Twitter has no control over this, but you can send them a request to take it down.
