Downloaded user manual, tried following instructions and the battery compartment does not respond
Most camera battery compartments have "raised lines" on the cover. They usually suggest that you put your finger or thumb on that surface and push with a sliding motion to open the cover. Again, there are many different models, but the Coolpix I have seen have that kind of opening device. Hope this helps!

I think this was a firmware fault on some cameras. Check with Nikon to see if there is a new firmware for your particular camera. This can be downloaded free of charge and uploaded to the camera via USB.
SOURCE: Nikon Coolpix 2100/3100/3200 battery compartment door latch broken (again)
I just purchased a new battery door for $15 with shipping from nikon. They sent a simple assembly diagram and I was able to replace the door in 30 minutes. I used a dremel to cut the old door off, but you dont have to do that. I got a little impatient.
Just buy the plastic piece and u can reuse the metal parts for your old battery door.

You may not be able to... but may be worth a try.

Call 3104148107 This is the Nikon Parts line, be warned it will probably take as long as 30-45 minutes of old time to get to a person.
Once you can get to a person, give them the camera model and describe the problem. They just sold me a replacement battery door for $9.95 + $6 dollars shipping and handling.
The rep was so nice he even printed out the device design blow up, and the relevant section of the manual, so I could see the step by step with out having to purchase the full blown repair manual, which runs $83.
SOURCE: cannot get ml-l3 remote control to work on nikon D90.
The two batteries are the ones in the remote? Make sure they are installed correctly. The camera will need to have a decently charged battery as well. Put the camera in P mode, pop up the flash and allow to charge. Make sure you pre-focus the camera on one subject or near the subject. The remote is supposed to focus the camera, but the camera may not fire if it cannot focus or if it needs the flash.
And most importantly make sure you are setting the camera drive button to remote so the camera knows to work off the remote. This button is in the upper right hand side on top and you will press the button and turn the control dial until the remote symbol appears. The remote should be pointed at the camera and will work best if you point it at the remote sensor on the front right side. make sure the strap or nothing else is obscuring the sensor.
If non of this helps, you may have a bad remote. Contact your retailer for a replacement
