Pull the drum tray out completely. With a soft cloth clean the laser scanner windows located in the roof of the chamber. Then remove the cyan toner cartridge from the tray and clean the corona wire at the front of the unit. Lastly clean the transfer belt with a clean soft cloth. If necessary moisten it with Iso propanol or white Meths. Put it all back together and try again. Lastly if it happens with print jobs but not photocopies, you may have a corrupted printer driver. Try deleting and re-installing from fresh (preferably the original CD).
Groaning noise on this model is usually down to third party consumables, Has this noise started after recently( within 5000 prints) replacing one of the colour toners cartridges, If so - you should replace the same cartridge with a HP OEM product and see if this cures the fault 99%of the time third party consumables do not replace key components when Re-Manufacturing Toner/Drum units to save on cost - however this causes Major issues with the expected Life of the Printer as A whole. Added stress on the drive systems due to poor toner units will invalidate any warranty/Repar Cover you may have, Despite what the adverts say CHEAPER toner Units Do Not Give You Cheaper Prints. They Just amage the rest of the Machine>>>>...
It is difficult for me to say with certainty without seeing an example of the prints, but it sounds as if the black toner powder is not being printed. I say this as your printer should not be able to differentiate between text and graphics.
It is hard to say whether the toner cartridge or drum unit is the likely culprit, but you can probably get a good idea based upon what consumables have been changed recently.
The only other potential cause that springs to mind is that something in the configuration of whatever software you are printing from is set to only print images.
I have a brother MFC 3240C. My Black ink stopped printing(initially printed horizontal faded lines and gradually got worse), the other colors were printing fine. I tried cleaning numerous time( 50 -100 times over 1-2 weeks ). Still no improvement. The way I print now is:
1. I go to Printer Properties
2. Change Media type from "Plain Paper" to "Inkjet Paper".
3. Change Quality to "Photo".
This takes a long time to print 1-2 minutes per page. However, this works for me since this is my Home printer and use it for printing only few pages here are there.
