your TV do not disable close caption in composite mode. It may in component mode. Please make sure that the close caption in your TV menu is not set to "text"
Please be advice that CC :Text is the ONLY one that can give you a black box.

the eprom in the set is probably going nuts , try unpluging for a day and see what happens if it does not clear the problem then tou need anew digital main pc board

Are you changing the format or picture size. Some times marked zoom on the remote. Are you using a cable box or SAT recever. These boxes also have setting for format change.
SOURCE: captions won't turn off
Is it hooked up to a Motorola cable box? If so go to the menu button on the box and navigate menu to the Closed Caption menu. The box can override the TV settings.

Just press the CC button on the remote. Some TV stations may not send out CC data. Pressing the CC button many times will cycle thru all the options including OFF.
