If you bought it used it may be registered to someone else. Sign on to amazon.com Below the search bar you'll see help. Go to device support and look for Contact Us. Fill in the info and someone can call you. By past experience it should be same day or very early next day. They will talk you through it.
My first kindle was the 2nd generation. It was already registered when I got it. The best thing I can tell you is to go to Amazon.com Under the address bar you will see "Your Account" Click Your account at top of list. One right side of screen click kindle help home, next screen Left side click Contact us. Fill in the info under call me. Someone will call you back and talk you through it. They are a breeze to work with.
Talk to Kindle help desk before you turn it over to a fix it shop. Go online to Amazon and log into your accout. Leave a message and someone will call back and answer any questions. They can walk you through quite a few problems.
