When recording a video zoomed in how do you get the camera to focus on the object ?

Samsung WB1100F . I have tried setting it to auto focus , I have tried making the background behind the object a different color so they would contrast, and nothing seems to be working.

Focusing is one of the most difficult parts for every digital camera. Special on the end of the moon, and if the lights are low. Every camera needs sharp contrasting backgrounds and no distracting other high contrast objects in the foreground.
Be aware when you soon in to the end of the zoom range, you can't focus on close objects. Minimum focus distance can be a few meters.
It could be you switched to silence the focus noise, what can be bad for focusing.
See what the manual is telling you about zoom and focus:

Read the manual again, and check what settings would be the best for you while shooting video with a long zoom setting.
Here is the manual:

Operating instructions for dsr pd177p sony video camera. I am not in postion to operate the camera, please guide how to operate the camera.

It is not very easy to say few lines to tutor ,but learn to use only by experience.Put the battery on for charging.Once fully charged slide the power switch to camera.Open the lens cap ,open the view finder display. Now you can see the picture on your screen.Set the camera to auto focus.show the camera to a white screen so as to white balance the camera. Now point at an object and do a trial Zooming using the auto zoom with your finger. The image will come closer and you can draw it to white screen.Having an object in view on the white screen, press the record button.Slowly move the zoom forward to get the right frame of the object.Press reccording button once again to stop.Repeat the process on different scenes.
Now shift the mode switch to play and rewind and play the reccorded portion.Practice.

Use spot metering & focus when taking pictures of an object.
Set your camera to highest Megapixel setting, Only use max. optical zoom on the subject (do not use digital zoom) .U dont need to get close to object as you can edit/zoom/crop the picture using any photo software program afterwards .

Video noise

When in video camera mode, press menu, and change auto focus mode from c (continuous) to s (single). The noise you hear is the auto focus motor going back and forth, trying to find the object focus constantly.
You can use this only if the object is not changing the distance to the camera while recording.

Picture still blurred on record mode

Your problem sounds like a focus problem. Could be that it's on manual focus and you're hitting the sweet spot only in full zoom? From the manual: 1. Set the power switch to CAMERA mode. 2. Turn the MENU DIAL up or down until the FOCUS is highlighted and then press the ENTER button. M. FOCUS(MF) will display. 3. Turn the MENU DIAL up or down until the object is in focus. Zoom out a little if focusing is difficult. 4. To return to AF (Auto Focus: ), press the ENTER button again. Hope it works out, let us know!

Switching from auto to manual focus

AF/MF (Auto Focus/Manual Focus) * The AF/MF function works in CAMERA, M.REC mode only. * In most situations, it is better to use the automatic focus feature, as it enables you to concentrate on the creative side of your recording. * Manual focusing may be necessary under certain conditions that make automatic focusing difficult and/or unreliable. Auto Focusing * If you are inexperienced in the use of camcorders, we recommend that you make use of Auto Focus. Manual Focusing In the following situations, you may obtain better results by adjusting the focus manually: * A picture containing several objects, some close to the camcorder, others further away. * A person enveloped in fog or surrounded by snow. * Very shiny or glossy surfaces like a car. * People or objects moving constantly or quickly like an athlete or a crowd. Follow These Simple Steps To Set The Manual Focus 1.
